Built for Small Towns
How a business in Green Forest or Harrison gets found online
Small town search is different from big city search and it works in your favor. There is far less competition. In Fayetteville a plumber is fighting forty other plumbers for attention. In Green Forest you might be fighting three, and two of them have nothing online at all. That gap is the opportunity, and closing it does not take money.
First, be findable at all
Google Business Profile, claimed and completed. This is free, takes an hour, and outranks everything else on this list. If you do nothing else from this article, do that.
Name the towns you serve, in writing
This is the mistake almost every rural business makes. Your site says quality service you can count on. It never says Green Forest, Harrison, Berryville, Alpena, or Carroll County. Google cannot guess where you work and neither can a customer. Put the town names on the page, in real sentences, on the home page and anywhere you list services.
If you travel to customers, list the towns. If you have a storefront, put the full address in the footer of every page.
Get a handful of local links
Links from other local sites tell Google you are a real business in a real place. The Chamber of Commerce directory. The county fair or festival sponsor page. A supplier who lists their dealers. The school booster club you sponsor. Five of these matter more than fifty random directory listings, and most cost nothing but an email.
Ask for reviews relentlessly
In a town this size, twelve Google reviews can put you at the top of the map. Twelve. That is one month of asking every customer. Nobody around here is running a review campaign, which means a small effort beats everybody.
Post something once a month
Not daily content. Once a month. A finished job, a seasonal note, a new service, a photo of the crew. It signals to Google and to customers that you are active. Facebook and your Google profile both count.
Skip paid ads for now
In a market this small, ads are usually not where your first dollar should go. Fix the free stuff, which most of your competitors have not, and you will pull ahead without spending anything.
The order to do it in
Claim the Google profile. Put your town names on your website. Ask every happy customer for a review. Get three or four local links. Post monthly. That is it, and it is more than nearly anyone else in your town is doing.
If you do not have a site to put the town names on, send me your business name and I will build you one for free so you can see it.
