Wix, Squarespace, or hire somebody? An honest comparison for small town owners.

I will give away the ending. DIY builders are good software. The reason they fail small business owners has almost nothing to do with the software.

The builders are genuinely capable

Squarespace looks good out of the box. Wix is flexible. Both can produce a perfectly respectable site for a local business. If you enjoy this kind of thing and you have a free weekend, you can get there.

The part nobody accounts for

It takes longer than you think. Not the dragging and dropping, which is easy. It is writing the words. Every owner sits down to build a site and stalls on the About page for three weeks. Then there are the photos, the hours, the service descriptions, figuring out why the menu looks wrong on a phone, and connecting a domain.

Most owners I talk to started one of these and stopped somewhere around sixty percent. It is not a character flaw. You are running a business during the day.

What it really costs

Squarespace runs about $16 to $23 a month billed annually, plus a domain. Wix is similar. So call it $250 to $400 a year forever. Over three years that is $750 to $1,200, and you did all the work.

Hiring somebody costs more up front and less over time, provided you own the result and are not stuck on a plan you cannot leave.

The question that actually decides it

Not which is cheaper. It is this: if you do not build it this month, will it get built at all?

If the honest answer is that it will sit half finished until spring, then the comparison is not builder versus designer. It is a finished website versus no website, and no website loses every time.

When DIY is the right call

Your budget is genuinely zero, or you actually like building things and will finish it. Then use Squarespace, pick their simplest template, and resist customizing anything. Done and plain beats ambitious and abandoned.

When to hire

You have tried before and stalled. You need it live this month. You would rather spend that weekend doing the work you get paid for. Or you want somebody you can text when the hours change.

The middle option people forget

You can have somebody build it and still own it outright, with no monthly fee. That is what I do. $549 once, you own the site, hosting included, and I am optional after that. No plan to stay on, nothing to cancel.
